President Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s fourth president since the beginning of the fourth republic in 1999, turns 78 today, Thursday, December 17.

  1. Muhammadu Buhari was born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina to his father Hardo Adamu, a Fulani chief, and mother Zulaihat.

2.  He is the twenty-third child of his father. He was raised by his mother after his father died when he was about four years old.


3.  The Nigerian leader was educated largely in Katsina. He also took military training in Kaduna as well as in Great Britain, India, and the United States

4.  President Buhari was involved in the military coup that ousted Yakubu Gowon in 1975 and was appointed the military governor of North Eastern state (now Borno) the same year.

5.  He was appointed a federal commissioner for petroleum resources by Gen Olusegun Obasanjo, who became military head of state when Gowon’s successor, Murtala Mohammed, was assassinated in 1976.

6.  By 1977, Buhari had become the military secretary at supreme military headquarters, which was the seat of government.

7.  From 1984 to 1985, President Buhari served as Nigeria’s military head of state.

8.  In 2003, President Buhari ran for president but was defeated by former president Olusegun Obasanjo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

9.  Buhari ran again in 2007 and was also defeated by the PDP’s candidate, late Umaru Yar’Adua.

10. The tenacious Nigerian president also contested in the 2011 presidential election and again lost to the PDP’s candidate, Goodluck Jonathan.

11.  After the unsuccessful attempts, Buhari was successfully elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as Nigeria’s president in 2015.

12.  Buhari’s 2015 victory marked the first time that the incumbent president had been defeated in Nigeria’s political history.

13.  In 2019, President Buhari was re-elected for second term, making him the second former military ruler, After Obasanjo, to be elected twice as civilian president.


14.  President Buhari is married to Aisha Halilu, now Aisha Buhari, since 1989. They have 5 children

15.  The president, however, has 5 kids from his previous marriage to the late Safinatu Yusuf.


16.  President Buhari is a winner of a number of notable awards and medals, among them are: Congo Medal, Global Seal of Integrity, National Service Medal, Grand Commander of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Loyal Service and Good Conduct Medal.

17.  In 2018, the African Union named President Buhari as the Anti-Corruption Champion for its 30th AU Summit in Addis Ababa
