The newspaper stated a politician, who was not named, is trying to influence the appointment of the next INEC boss to help his 2023 ambition.
A top government official, who does not want to be named, said if Yakubu’s tenure is not renewed by President Buhari, two national commissioners are line to take over from him.
If Yakubu is reappointed, he would be the first INEC chairman to have a second term.
While some civil society groups are calling for the issue surrounding Yakubu’s tenure to be resolved as soon as possible, the presidency reportedly said there was still time to take action on the matter.
Meanwhile, the INEC has asked the commission’s staff to ensure that the Ondo governorship election is credible.
The Cable reported that Yakubu said Nigerians are expecting more from the commission, urging the INEC officials to consolidate on their achievement by making sure every single vote counts.
He also asked the officials to resist any form of temptation that could dent the image of the electoral umpire.
