Abimbola Adedigba is a 43 year old mother and one of the Nigerian women running businesses that is male-dominated, and are employing others. The Nigerian mother of three makes her living fixing car air conditions.
In a recent interview with, she said that it is not ideal for a woman to rely solely on her husband’s source of income. The 43-year-old who has been working as a car AC specialist for the past 18 years said she loves the job and wouldn’t trade it for any.
The woman whose workplace is situated in the Bodija area of Oyo state said the work requires determination. Speaking on how she combines it with her wifely duties, Abimbola stated that she is so used to the work that it doesn’t rob off her responsibilities as a wife or her marital duties to her husband.
Now with about four young men who work under her, the hard working lady has been able to save enough money from the job and got a piece of land which she is building on. She mentioned that there isn’t anything that cannot be fixed when brought to her workshop.
Recall that history was made in Nigeria as a first all-female mechanic workshop was opened in a northern state. The workshop, a private initiative of NANA Girls and Women Empowerment Initiative was commissioned by Jelani Aliyu, the director-general of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC).
It was gathered that the shop is targeted at breaking the gender stereotype in car repairs and maintenance. He described it as an “impressive development” saying the initiative will create job opportunities and provide income for women in the field of mechanical engineering’.
