Anthony Joshua’s world title defence against Pulev can’t hold without fans – Promoter

Anthony Joshua’s title defence with Kubrat Pulev might wait a little longer

The fight was scheduled for June 20 but will not hold on that day due to the global pandemic

Promoters claim fight of that magnitude cannot be held behind closed doors

Anthony Joshua’s fight with Kubrat Pulev has not been finalized amid the global pandemic that has crippled sporting activities around the world.

The heavyweight championship bout was slated for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on June 20, but would not materialize.

All sporting activities are set to return behind closed doors and Joshua’s defense of his WBO, WBA, IBF and IBO belts remains uncertain.

Organizers believe it would be difficult for a fight of that magnitude to be attended to without fans inside the venue.

Matchroom Boxing CEO Frank Smith told Mirror Fighting: “A lot of the big fights, Joshua vs Pulev, Dereck Chisora v Oleksandr Usyk and Dillian Whyte vs Alexander Povetkin, are very difficult to run financially without the gate.

“I think when we start up you will see a certain level of fights which we can run behind closed doors and then we’ll have to see how long this continues.

“We don’t know whether we will have crowds in December or if we’ll have big enough crowds; it might be that you are allowed 50 per cent of an arena, you might be allowed 5,000, and that is the big question right now.

“I’m hopeful he will fight this year, we’re looking at a number of different options. We’re talking to Tottenham still but that’s very tough with the football schedule and not knowing what will happen with crowds.

“We could look at smaller venues for him as time goes on, its difficult to make a decision now without knowledge of how things will look.”
