Bishop Oyedepo criticises government for opening markets and closing churches, Nigerians react

Popular Nigerian pastor, Bishop Oyedepo, has reacted to the easing of lockdown by the government

The preacher complained about why churches should remain closed while markets are allowed to open

Bishop Oyedepo proceeded to say that he smells a rat and Nigerians have reacted on social media

The coronavirus pandemic has led to great changes all over the world as things that people occupied themselves with have now been barred for the safety of others.

Several governments across countries placed bans on public gatherings such as schools, churches, mosques and more. Despite this being done to promote social distancing and reduce how people come in contact with each other, it has earned a lot of criticism.

Just recently, the Nigerian government eased the lockdown in some states by trying to regulate movement. Markets were allowed to be open within a certain period while religious gatherings are still banned.

A video recently made the rounds on social media showing popular pastor, Bishop Oyedepo, speaking about the new government directive in the country.

According to the preacher, he can smell a rat. Oyedepo wondered why markets should be allowed to open while churches remain closed.

An excerpt from his sermon reads:

“There is something wrong. For people to be allowed to be in the market for six hours and can’t be in church for two hours, it is an upside-down way of looking at things.

“Which one is more orderly? The market or the church?

“I can smell a rat. The Lord spoke to me on it so strong yesterday. I can smell a rat. Behind all this is ‘how do we stop the church from exploding?’ The people involved don’t know it.

“The voice of darkness is influencing people at various levels, targeting the church because the growth and expansion of the church is the greatest headache of the devil. But the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. The devil and all his agents shall surely pay for this.

“I don’t know what hospital that records the kind of healings that the church of God records. And now hospitals, where people die every day, are open, but the church is closed because the oppression of the devil has no medical cure.”

Nigerians on social media have now reacted to the preacher’s take on the issue. While some agreed with him, many criticised him as they asked how the church is more important that the market. Others argued that people can pray from home but it is not the same with going to the market.
