The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that it has shelved the idea of suspending the Edo governorship election after political parties complied with its notice over threats of violence.
Festus Okoye, INEC’s national commissioner for information and chairman of voter education, made the disclosure on Wednesday, August 12 on Channels TV.
According to This Day, he assured Nigerians that the September 19 Edo governorship election will go ahead as planned.
The INEC official said that the commission has observed that political parties toned down from the threats of violence ahead with the poll.
He explained that the Edo state governorship election must be conducted before October 13, or else, there would be a constitutional crisis.
Meanwhile, the Edo governor, Godwin Obaseki, has declared his administration’s commitment to ensure peace in the state despite the politically charged atmosphere.
Obaseki gave the assurance when he visited the Egiegbai II of Ekperi Kingdom, Alhaji Deke Kanoba, in Etsako central local government area of the state in continuation of his ward-to-ward campaign ahead of the September 19 gubernatorial election.

“I will continue to do everything within my powers even in the face of provocation from opposition to ensure that our dear state is peaceful,” he said.
In his remarks, the Egiegbai II of Ekperi Kingdom, said that his palace does not get involved in partisan politics, adding that his interest is in good governance.
