Mauree Turner, who identifies as non-binary, or as neither male or female became Oklahoma’s first Muslim state representative in a landmark victory, according to the LGBTQ Victory Fund.
“Conversion therapy and trans students not getting the opportunity to play the sport that they would like to play … that’s the type of things that we’re combatting when we show up,” the 27-year-old Turner was quoted as saying by Reuters.
Turner defeated Republican Kelly Barlean to represent Oklahoma’s District 88, found in Oklahoma City. Turner won roughly 71 percent of the votes, CNN reported.
