Fresh Attack: Many Injured As Vigilantes Resist Gunmen In Anambra


The Minister of Labour, Dr. Chris Nwabueze Ngige home town was Monday was saved from attack. Gunmen reportedly stormed the town on Saturday night allegedly in preparation for their nefarious activities on Monday.

Sources said the hoodlums who were responsible for attacks and robbery at Nnobi, Nnewi and environs arrived Alor in a white Sienna car with the inscription “Onitsha South Plus” Saturday night.

It was said that the Alor vigilante men, on a tip-off, mobilised, detected and trailed them to a popular hotel in the area where the hoodlums were said to have lodged their female counterparts in readiness for the Monday operation.

Luck was said to have ran out of them when the vigilante trailed them to one of the houses in the community allegedly belonging to a popular personality in the country slated for attack.

It was gathered that the hoodlums on reaching the house sighted the vigilante following them and opened fire on them.

Daily Independent learned that the vigilante overpowered the hoodlums and in the process allegedly neutralised two of them while one escaped with burns on his body.

The operating vehicle of the gunmen was also burnt in the process while their female counterparts were later handed over to the Police on Monday.

The number of casualties was not known at press time, but among the feared dead was a young man said to be a notorious armed robber identified as Baby Nayoka , popularly called Baby and one unidentified young man known for drug peddling at Nnobi and Nnewi.

When contacted, the PPRO for Anambra State Police Command, Ikenga Tochukwu, said he had not got any reports of the incident.

However, following the incident Monday sit-at-home was without horrible incident as roads were dry and businesses halted as usual. But there is still fear that the incident might lead to retaliation by hoodlums.
