Hon. Dr Chukwuemeka Ujam is a cheerful giver, astute politician and a pace setter

Is it not an uncommon feat for someone of Dr Chukwuemeka Ujam’s status, albeit presently not a political office holder, instead of going back to his choice and more comfortable abode, focusing his attention to the safety of his family in the face of the present global pandemic – Covid 19.

Rather, though routinely of him, coughed out a huge sum of money, sent out his team into all the 28 wards of Nkanu East and West to reach out to his constituents?

That is exactly what Honourable Chukwuemeka Ujam and his team was doing today when I ran into them. They were reaching out to families and individuals sharing out money as a palliative measure in the face of the present lockdown and inherent hardship.

To me, Dr Ujam’s unprecedented gesture once again cements his position among the most sensitive, frontline, and big-hearted individuals in Nkanu Land, and indisputably, a pacesetter in the herculean task of fighting this worldwide scourge – coronavirus.

Though there is no gainsaying the necessity of the Government’s directed lockdown as a way of constraining the prevalence rate and menace of the virus; it is equally important to note that the Government’s inability to make adequate and proactive provisions, especially in the area of payment in advance of salaries to workers that are now locked in, leaves the citizens in between two horrible options: the fear of the virus itself and the fear of hunger. It is at this juncture that Chukwuemeka’s money gift comes in as a miracle.

It then becomes incumbent unpon all our Political office holders – past and present, to emulate Dr Chukwuemeka Ujam, and start flexing there financial muscles towards ameliorating the present sufferings of their people.

There is therefore no better time than now, for our politicians and other good spirited individuals and organisations to start sharing those pre election gifts. Those cups of rice, salt, yam, money and whatever would be priceless to your people in this trying time.

Dr Chukwuemeka Ujam has set the pace, let others, including you, follow.

The future is certainly brighter .
