LAMP Group Seeks For Elimination of Enugu Monarch Over Intimidation of Subjects

League of Agunese-Mmaku Professionals (LAMP), has requested Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to revoke the certificate of recognition and staff of office issued to their traditional ruler.

The group made their demands known in a protest letter sent to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on February 22, titled “Save Agunese Mmaku from the tyranny of Igwe Cyprian Nevobasi.”
The letter signed by Vincent Okafor and Linus Okoli, on behalf of the community reads: “We have come to ask and beg your Excellency to save us from the tyranny of Igwe Cyprian Nevobasi, the self imposed Igwe of Agunese-Mmaku autonomous community in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State. We had written Your Excellency on this matter, and despite your appeal for calm and restraint, Igwe Nevobasi has continued to act like the lord of Mmaku”.
“On December 30th, 2021, Igwe Nevobasi truncated our scheduled Town Union election with fictitious reasons that the Commissioner for Rural Development, Prince Emeka Mamah gave the directive. When it became clear that the commissioner did not give such a directive, the Igwe changed his narrative that the venue of the meeting had been invaded by unknown gunmen.
“He truncated the election because he wanted to impose his preferred candidate on the community. Having failed in his plot, he unilaterally established a caretaker town union executive and installed his candidate as the chairman”
“The Igwe swore to deal ruthlessly with all those expressing dissenting opinions in how he has been managing the affairs of the community. He listed names of 16 persons from the community and tagged them sponsors of Unknown gunmen, ESN and IPOB; and submitted the petition to the Nigeria Police Headquarters.
“Since January this year, our community has been in turmoil. The prominent sons of the community have been hiding, and in fear of their lives because Igwe Nevobasi has placed a bounty of one million naira on the head of each of them”
“We can no longer bear the excesses of the Igwe. He has misappropriated the 5 Million naira grant from the Enugu state government; he has unilaterally sold large portions of our land at Agboneri Mmaku. And now, he has resorted to using the Police to harass and intimidate our people. We can no longer bear this suffocation from a man who lacks conscience and integrity”.
They further demanded that Governor Ugwuanyi should, “revoke the certificate of recognition and staff of office issued to Nevobasi since he has shown sufficient reasons that he is unfit to occupy such an exalted office.
“Prevail on Nevobasi to refrain from using members of the Nigerian Police, DSS and other security agencies to harass, intimidate and arrest members of our community”
“Prevail on him to refrain from interfering in the affairs of the Town Union and to compel him to dissolve the Caretaker Committee he unilaterally set up as he lacks the powers to constitute such committee; and to allow our community to elect a leader of their choice”.
But in his reaction on behalf of the traditional ruler, his Palace Secretary, Chief Oliver Chukwuobasi, dismissed the allegations as baseless and untrue. He said that those behind them were men who are wanted by the police for various crimes.
He urged them to hand themselves over to the police and answer to the allegations against them rather than sowing seeds of discord in the community.
