NCAC seeks legal power to sanction Big Brother Naija, Bobrisky

The National Council for Art and Culture (NCAC) has appealed to lawmakers to empower the council with a legal framework to put an end to nudity displays and activities of cross-dressers in the country.

NCAC Director General, Segun Runsewe, who made the appeal on Tuesday during an investigative hearing by an ad hoc committee of the House of Representatives, explained that a legislative framework granted by the House would empower the council to sanction Big Brother Naija organisers for nudity displayed on the show and as well to prosecute crossdressers in the country.

There is a bill in the House seeking to amend the Same-Sex (Prohibition) Act to prohibit cross-dressing in Nigeria. The amendment, sponsored by Muda Umar (APC, Bauchi), seeks to amend sections 4 and 5 of the principal act.

The bill proposes that “A person engaging in cross-dressing is guilty of an offence and liable to imprisonment of six months or a fine of five hundred thousand naira.”

Speaking before the lawmakers, Runsewe said, “I am the first person who took Big Brother Nigeria to the NBC to report them and Big Brother (organisers) tried to reach me and I told them that if the culture in other parts of the world is to be naked – nudity, they should not bring it to Nigeria because our culture is rich and it respects the integrity of our country.”

Reacting to the request, Alex Egbonna, lawmaker (PDP, Cross-River), complained that Runsewe’s past intervention had not stopped the display of nudes on the show.

Responding to the observation by the lawmaker, Runsewe said, “this honourable house just needs to empower us with just a legal framework and that nonsense will stop.”

2023: Soludo denies ordering APGA officials to work against Obi

Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo has denied media reports that he ordered officials of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), to work against former governor, Peter Obi.

Some reports on social media and blogs had reported that Soludo charged his party members to work against Obi, who is the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP).

The report said Soludo instructed his supporters to work for the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, who they said has promised to hand over to an Igbo after his tenure.

But the Chief Press Secretary to Soludo, Mr Christian Aburime has said the reports were false.

He described the allegation as disdainful, fallacious and distasteful, especially the insinuation that Soludo hopes to succeed Atiku after his first term.

“We would have chosen to ignore this mischievous and utterly despicable publication but for the benefit of a few innocent Ndi Anambra who could be misinformed by the write-up.”

Aburime said the meeting with APGA chieftains was a routine gathering where issues concerning APGA were discussed, adding that at no time during the meeting was, Mr Peter Obi, a point of discourse.

“It is pertinent to note that issues discussed at the meeting were purely issues relating to APGA affairs. We, therefore, urge Ndi-Anambra and members of the general public to completely ignore and disregard the publication in all its entirety,” Aburime said.

Appeal court challenges FG, ASUU to resolve strike dispute out of justice system

The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Wednesday challenged the Federal Government and the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU to resolve their dispute amicably out of court.

The Appellate Court suggested twenty-four hours for the two parties to have a rethink, sit down and come out with a resolution that would make Nigerians happy.

Justice Georgewill Biobele Abraham threw the challenge when the Federal Government and ASUU appeared for a hearing in the appeal instituted by ASUU against the judgment of the National Industrial Court.

Specifically, Justice Georgewill tasked counsel to the Federal Government, Mr James Igwe SAN and that of ASUU, Mr Femi Falana SAN to first sit down as lawyers, take a patriotic position and convey the position to their clients.

“There is time for everything, time for war and time for peace. As Ministers in the temple of justice, we want to see the two of you as Senior Lawyers, encourage and explore an amicable settlement of this dispute.

“In fact, we expect to return to this court on Thursday with the good news that the dispute has been thrashed out and all the appreciation of Nigerians will go to you.

“So, talk to your clients to take the interest of the nation into consideration for the sake of our children. As you leave here, go and sit down and talk and resolve the matter.”

Counsel to the Federal Government, James Igwe thanked the Justices for the admonitions and promised to look into the counselling with his colleague.

Falana on his part remarked that he had initiated something similar and would be happy to do more on the way out of the strike.

The Senior lawyer, however, restated that an amicable resolution of the matter would involve give and take from the two parties.

Meanwhile, the court presided over by Justice Barka Hamma Akawu has fixed October 6 for hearing in a motion filed by ASUU for a stay of execution of the judgment of the Industrial Court which ordered the striking lecturers to resume work pending the resolution of their dispute with the Federal Government.

At Wednesday’s proceedings, Femi Falana SAN had sought to move the motion but the Federal Government lawyer objected on the ground that he had not been served with the motion dated September 28.

The record of the Court, however, revealed that the motion was served on the office of the Attorney General of the Federation AGF.

Following this, the government lawyer sought a short adjournment to enable him respond to the motion.

Presiding Justice Barka Hamma Akawu subsequently fixed October 6 for hearing of the motion.

Mbaka: There will be dire consequences – Ohanaeze kicks against Church’s decision

Apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has again waded into the controversies surrounding the temporary transfer of the spiritual director of the Adoration Ministry, Enugu, Nigeria, AMEN, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka to a monastery.

LEAKBLAST had reported that three months after Mbaka returned from punishment following his messages against Peter Obi of the Labour Party, he has now been sent to Auchi in Edo State, he has been sent to a monastery where he is expected to remain till next year.

In the interim, Rev. Fr. Anthony Amadi will superintend over the Adoration Ministry, a development that is already generating protest from Mbaka’s followers.

Amadi was reported to have escaped death by the whiskers as the adorers tried to lynch him as soon as he was introduced as Mbaka’s replacement.

In a statement made available to LEAKBLAST on Wednesday, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide said the latest decision of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu against Mbaka was a continuation of the age-long witch-hunting of the priest.

Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, the National President of OYC, who signed the statement said the group had over one year ago alerted of a sinister plot to take over the Adoration ground.

“Sometime last year, we did raise the red flag that there was an orchestrated campaign against Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka by his colleagues in the ministry who are jealous of his spiritual gifts.

“We said then that we uncovered a sinister plot to take over the Adoration Ministry which Fr. Mbaka personally laboured to build over the years, after he was chased out of CKC, GRA, Enugu on a punitive transfer.

“How can we explain a situation where someone just returned from three months’ punishment only to be sent to a monastery in Edo State?

“While we do not challenge the fact that the Bishop has the prerogative to transfer the priests under this watch, it must be noted that Mbaka is not just like any other priest.

“Here we are talking about a priest who is catering for the welfare of thousands of indigent Nigerians, irrespective of their origin and religion. He goes along and pays their school fees, house rent, hospital bills, among others. Is there any other priest in Enugu State that is in such a humanitarian mold? The answer is ‘No’”.

Okwu said in the light of the above, there would be dire consequences as long as Mbaka stayed away.

“Many people will lose their jobs; many will drop out of schools; the consequences of this decision will be more than anyone ha s imagined.

“This is why we have always appealed to his Lordship, the Bishop, to handle Mbaka’s case with caution but it is like some people are influencing him negatively.

“As Igbo youths, we are concerned about the aftermath of this development and our stand is that the Church should not complicate the issues already plaguing the society,” the Igbo youth President cautioned.

Meanwhile, Fr. Mbaka in his last message before he announced his replacement on Sunday had said some people were just wasting their time with regards to the 2023 presidential election.

He, however, said God told him not to reveal the details of the prophecy.

“This vision is an appointed time; it is not for me to come and speak here. If God has not constrained me, I will just give Nigerians a simple solution, because it is like many people are wasting their time.

But while departing for the monastery on Wednesday, he urged his followers to cease from further protest. He said they should rather pray for him.

Aisha Buhari: My husband suffered from PTSD for many years

President Muhammadu Buhari suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for many years as a result of his involvement in the Nigerian civil war without receiving any rehabilitation, his removal as military Head of State, and his subsequent detention for 40 months without being charged with any crime, according to First Lady Mrs Aisha Buhari.

The First Lady made the disclosure on Tuesday as a special guest of honour at the ground-breaking ceremony for the Armed Forces Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Centre (AFPTSDC) initiated by the wife of the Chief of Defence Staff, Mrs Lucky Irabor through the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA).

She was quoted as saying by Leakblast.com.

She claims that Buhari’s failure in three straight elections made matters worse for her in the circumstance she found herself in when she married him at the age of 19 and unintentionally served as his physiotherapist.

She reprimanded lawmakers who had recently lost primary elections and had become nearly inconsolable, with some turning off their phones in an effort to avoid contact.

Mrs Buhari stated: “I want to thank DEPOWA for this foresighted vision of establishing a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Centre for our soldiers. Indeed, PTSD is a mental health condition triggered by terrifying events.

“It is a reality that soldiers and military families have to live with, despite its negative consequences. Being a soldier’s wife or a retired soldier’s wife and a wellness expert, I understand the challenges associated with PTSD and its impact on military families and the nation.

“My husband served the Nigerian Army for 27 years before he was overthrown in a coup d’état. He fought [in the] civil war for 30 months without rehabilitation; he ruled Nigeria for 20 months and was detained for 40 months without disclosing the nature of his offence.

“One year after he came out from detention, we were married, I clocked 19 years in his house as his wife, legitimately. I suffered the consequences of PTSD, because having gone through all these, and at the age of 19, to handle somebody, who was a former Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of Nigeria’s Armed Forces, to tell him that he is wrong is the first mistake you will make.

“So, at the age of 19, I had to figure out how to tell somebody of his calibre that he was wrong or right and that was the beginning of my offence in his house, and contesting elections in 2003 and failed, 2007, failed and 2011, the same thing – all without rehabilitation – I became a physiotherapist.

“Finally, the whole nation rose against the misuse of power and bad governance. He only succeeded when it became a movement and here we are today. He ruled Nigeria before and he is ruling Nigeria now and this is the last time and final.

“Failing election for three times was a big blow to every contestant but those that have contested for just yesterday, a simple primary election, they are still living in a traumatic condition, I tried to console them, I tried to talk to them, some of them have switched off their phones up till today, just because of a primary election.

“You can imagine me at 19 years, handling somebody that went to war, suffered coup d’état, then lost several elections, and, finally, getting to the Villa in 2015. Also, for a woman to tell them that this is wrong or right in Nigeria and Africa is a problem.”

She expressed gratitude for the sacrifices made by military personnel and their contributions to fostering national unity, saying, “In that case, I want to use this opportunity to appreciate members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria for their sacrifices and contributions to nation-building.

“The fallen Heroes remain evergreen in our minds and many with us are wounded physically and mentally. I want to appreciate their wives and families; I want to let them know that the whole nation is with them.”

Mrs Buhari emphasized that soldiers were the main victims and that the PTSD centre was crucial for all members of the armed forces.

“This centre is timely, as PTSD is a problem that really deserved a solution of this nature, and providing facilities for treatment and rehabilitation of patients is key. Therefore, fundraising is not the solution, the solution is the federal government that sent them to the war front to take responsibility for taking care of the mental health of returnees from the war front. PTSD cuts across all ages,” she said.

READ ALSO: Road to 2023: ACF warns politicians against rigging, thuggery

The president’s wife then announced that the military and the presidency would take over the project and halted the planned financial campaign for it.

She stated, “I thank DEPOWA for this initiative and the military establishment for supporting them. I call on them to ensure that this centre provides quality and sustained care for soldiers that suffer from PTSD.

“It is the responsibility of the whole armed forces to extract from their budget and build this centre. Mrs Irabor, it is no longer your project; it is my project and the project of Mr President, we are going to work round the clock to make sure that it is completed and commissioned before we leave office.”

President of DEPOWA, Mrs Vickie Irabor, said the centre was born out of compassion for families of soldiers and research conducted by the association.

According to her, “We have identified the extraordinary challenges being faced by officers and soldiers on the frontlines in securing our nation by fighting terrorism, banditry, and other societal ills. Some of these challenges range from physical injuries, mental health issues, and sometimes, sadly, paying the supreme price in the defence of our dear nation Nigeria.

“While we have hospitals to take care of physical injuries, we have realised that there is a huge gap in mental health responses globally, including in Nigeria, especially, in the treatment, management, and rehabilitation of PTSD, faced by families in the armed forces.”

She stressed, “In response to these issues, DEPOWA, under my leadership, decided to pursue the implementation of a novel, first-of-its-kind, Legacy-based Armed Forces PTSD Centre. When completed, the centre will help evaluate, counsel, and provide adequate support to personnel and, by extension, their families before reintegration from conflict zones.

“It will also help to enhance national, regional, and global stability, as well as help, boost military capability to continue to deal with all forms of insecurity. I believe that establishing this facility will be a step in ensuring the stability of military families post-conflict engagements and encouragement to officers and soldiers that help is available should they need it after assignments. The facility will also serve as a repository for future research on mental health challenges in the Armed Forces of Nigeria.”

The event was attended by former President of Malawi, Dr Joyce Banda; Vice President of Liberia, Dr Jewel Howard-Taylor; Member, UK House of Lords, Baroness Sandy Verma; Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum; Minister of Defence, Maj-Gen Bashir Magashi (rtd); Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Lucky Irabor; and the service chiefs.

Road to 2023: ACF warns politicians against rigging, thuggery

Northern mouthpiece Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) on Wednesday sounded a note of warning to politicians in the country against election rigging and using thugs during the 2023 general elections.

In his open remarks at the meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Forum in Kaduna, ACF Chairman Chief Audu Ogbeh said the warning was necessary because the forthcoming election is of “great concern to us”.

Chief Ogbeh also spoke on the state of insecurity in the country, saying that the federal government was not fast enough in curtailing terrorism.

He added that there was a tremendous improvement on part of security agencies in the last six months in curtailing the activities of the criminals, and called for the total elimination of them.

Chief Ogbeh, who is the former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, expressed his displeasure with havoc caused by flooding across the country.

He appealed to the federal government to take steps to curtail flooding in the country.

“We want to tell Nigerians that the 2023 election is of great concern to us. ACF will not accept rigging and thuggery so that the choice of God and Nigerians’ will prevail.

“We call on INEC and security agencies to ensure law and order during the election.

“We are hoping and praying to Almighty God to give us the opportunity to elect leaders of our choice who will be the best materials to govern Nigeria.

“Another issue of great concern to us is insecurity. Insecurity is the biggest tragedy that has befallen the country in the last few years.

“However, security agencies have made tremendous efforts in curtailing the excesses of terrorists in the last six months.

“We look forward to their total elimination. But we regret that the steps taken by the government were not fast enough”. He said.

Speaking on the effect of flooding in the country, the ACF chairman said: “Flooding has done a great disaster to agriculture and the people. So we call on the federal government to take steps to curtail flooding”.

On ASUU/Federal government face-off, Chief Ogbeh advised that the two of them should resolve the contending issue without further delay.

“We are asking ASUU and the federal government to resolve the issue as possible. We have heard from ASUU and the Federal government. We are appealing to them to settle as quickly as possible,” he said.
