Lionel Messi couldn’t hide his feelings after he broke Pele’s long-standing goal scoring record
The 33-year-old scored his 644th goal as a Barcelona player in their 3-0 win at Real Valladolid
England goal scoring legend Gary Lineker congratulated the Argentine for his remarkable feat
Lionel Messi got the world at their feet applauding following his record-breaking feat during Barcelona’s 3-0 win over Real Valladolid.
The Argentine only scored a goal in the match but it took his tally to 644 for La Blaugrana, becoming the first to score that amount of goals for a single club.
In the clash against Valencia, Messi equaled Pele’s 643 goals for Santos when he scored in the 2-2 draw at the Camp Nou.
The 33-year-old is now the only player on the planet to achieve the unbelievable goalscoring feat and Messi took to Instagram to express his happiness.
“When I started playing soccer, I never thought I would break a record.
“And even less the one that I achieved today that I had @pele … I can only thank everyone who helped me in these years, my teammates, my family, my friends and everyone who supports me every day. Hug!!”
England and World Cup legend Gary Lineker also congratulated Messi on his achievement and stated no player will ever match that record.
Lineker said on his Twitter handle:
“Lionel Messi has scored his 644th goal for @FCBarcelona. He’s beaten @Pele’s record of most goals scored at a single club. This is a record that no one thought would ever be beaten. It will never be beaten again.”
