Notorious people smuggler extradited to Netherlands

Ethiopia has extradited an Eritrean human smuggler to the Netherlands to face charges of running a large-scale human trafficking ring.

Tewelde Goitom, known as Welid, was arrested in Ethiopia two years ago and sentenced to 18 years for human trafficking by an Addis Ababa court.

The fresh charges against him are linked to the smuggling of Eritreans into the Netherlands.

He arrived at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport on Wednesday and is expected to appear in court on Thursday, according to the Dutch authorities.

Human rights groups say Eritreans flee their country because of forced indefinite conscription, enslavement, torture, and mass imprisonment.

Fleeing Eritreans use smugglers to be taken to Europe via the Mediterranean Sea.

The amount of money demanded by the smugglers often increases along the way and migrants whose families can’t pay are tortured, according to media reports.
