Plateau council workers threaten strike

Plateau Local Government workers under the auspices of Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council have threatened to proceed if the state government does not pay N30,000 minimum wage.

LEAKBLAST gathered Governor Simon Lalong has invited the labour leaders for a crucial meeting on Thursday to iron out the matter.

The trade unions, in a letter to Lalong and jointly signed by Mr James Diwa (Chairman) and Mrs Janet Ijah (Secretary) called for immediate implementation of the payment.

The letter reads: “While we appreciate His Excellency for the implementation of the new wage for the state civil servants in the month of October 2020, we, the workers in the 17 LGAs are yet to enjoy/benefit same as their counterparts in the state.

“We write to refer to you (Governor) to our letter of Sept. 27, 2020 and the 72 hours ultimatum letter issued to the government to implement the new national minimum wage for both the state and the Local government wormers.”

On the strength of the lopsidedness in the payment of the minimum wage, the council said: ” your Excellency Sir, it may interest you to know that this gesture has not only caused apprehension and anxiety among the 17 LG workers.

‘As such, labour leaders are no longer safe in their office and homes.

“Therefore, to avert any urgly situation, the organized labour is hereby issuing a 7 day grace of notice to the government within which to implement the new national minimum wage for the 17 Local Government workers as the organized labour not guarantee further industrial harmony at the expiration of the 7 days notice beginning from Nov. 25, 2020.”

The Nation reports Lalong had promised to implement the payment of the minimum wage in March but the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic stopped the move.
