An appeal from the Taraba Tiv Youth Progressive Mission (TTYPM) has gone to Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku of Taraba State to return the displaced Tiv persons to their ancestral homes in the southern part of the state.

The appeal, if acted on, would enable them to exercise their franchise in the forthcoming general elections slated for next year, the group claimed.

The group in a press conference on Wednesday in Jalingo said “our parents are languishing in the dreaded jaws of poverty in different places as they watch our younger ones seat at home without any means of accessing schools.”

Led by their spokesperson, Kaduna Fanen, the ethnic group expressed sadness that a population of over ten thousand people had already been frustrated from participating in the just concluded PVC registration owing to the numerous challenges they are passing through.”

They said more than thirty thousand people are likely to be disenfranchised in the next election if the governor fails to take proactive steps towards returning the Tiv IDPs to their ancestral homes.

While calling on the governor to address their plights, they grieved that for over three years now, their relatives, displaced from the Southern part of the state have been passing through all kinds of dehumanising conditions in all the places they have been taking refuge without government intervention.

The group said, “Some of our ancestral homes have already been surveyed and sold to the Fulanis in Ibi Local Government Area and our ancestral homes shared by our Jukun brothers even as they are taking and building over our ancestral homes in some parts of some Local Government Areas in the zone.”

Also expressing their disappointment towards some of their leaders whom they accused of politicizing the issue, they said “funny enough, some of our leaders have failed to say the truth or come out bold to resist this form of injustice.”

“They are rather playing politics with this serious issue looking for political positions despite the fact that some of them cannot even access their homes and polling units.”

Stressing how desperate the Tiv IDPs want to return to their ancestral homes in the southern part of the state, they beckoned on the lawmakers from the zone to help facilitate the process.
