Senate confirms 8 new Supreme Court judges


Eight Nigerian judges have been confirmed as justices of the Supreme Court

The approval was made by the Senate in respect to President Muhammadu Buhari’s letter announcing the nominees

This is coming barely two months after the president elevated four judges from the northern region as the apex court justices

The Nigerian Senate has approved the nomination of eight judges as justices of the Supreme Court.

The confirmation was made during the plenary of the lawmakers on Tuesday, October 13, following the letter of President Muhammadu Buhari making such request.

Ahmad Lawan, president of the upper chamber, read the letter to his colleagues before proceeding to approve the nominees based on the report of Senator Opeyemi Bamidele-led Senate committee on judiciary, human rights and legal matters.

President Buhari, gathers, said the appointment of judges was based on the recommendations of the National Judicial Council (NJC).

The judges are Lawal Garba, (Northwest), Helen Ogunwumiju (Southwest), Abdu Aboki (Northwest), and M M Saulawa (Northwest).

Others are Adamu Jauro (Northeast), Samuel Oseji (Southsouth), Tijani Abubakar (northeast), and Emmanuel Agim (Southsouth).

This publication notes that the development came barely two months after President Buhari announced the elevation of four of the judges from the north to the Supreme Court.

One of the judges, Justice Garba, was the chairman of the 2019 presidential election petition tribunal which upheld President Buhari’s second term election.

However, eighteen other judges including Justice Gumna Kashim Kaigama, Kadi Muhammed Abubakar were also appointed to head courts at the state level following NJC recommendation.
