Senator Ike Ekweremadu: A Victim of Schadenfreude and Malicious Pleasure – Martins Chiedozie Ugwu

Schadenfreude is a German word which means, the experience of pleasure, joy, or self-satisfaction that comes from learning of or witnessing the troubles, challenges, or humiliation of another.

The word has been blended with other words to form neologisms as early as 1993, when Lincoln Caplan, in his book Skadden: Power, Money, and the Rise of a Legal Empire, used the word Skaddenfreude to describe the delight that competitors of Skadden Arps took in its troubles of the early 1990s.

Although common decency may limit malicious pleasure, it is clear that people do sometimes enjoy the adversity suffered by other individuals. So the important question here is why do we indulge in malicious pleasure? Why do we find satisfaction and pleasure in the tribulation of others? To answer the question correctly, let’s first look at the current ordeal of His Excellency Senator Prof. Ike Ekweremadu (Ikeoha Ndigbo) with the UK metropolitan Police, where he was wrongly accused of child trafficking. Yes he was wrongly accused because there are already established facts to counter the charges against him.

First, the boy in question, David Ukpo Nwamini is not a minor. His Bank Verification Number (22509616391) obtained in 2019, (years even before he was opportuned to meet the revered Senator) shows clearly that he was born more than 21 years ago. His International Passport also shows that David was born on 12th Oct. 2000, meaning that by November this year 2022, the fellow will be 22 years. So the passport may not have been altered as speculated by the carriers of unverified news or people who take joy in malicious pleasure. Secondly, the journey to the United Kingdom was with his full consent and he knew what he was going there to do as clearly stated in his visa application.

The young man suddenly changed his mind just before the transplant and in a move to stay back in UK, he chose to report the matter to the police and lied that he is a minor which is criminal and evil against a man who is running up and down to save the life of his daughter who is terminally ill. Fourthly as an accomplished parliamentarian, a scholar of high repute and global figure whose respect for human rights and rule of law is unrivaled, Senator Ekweremadu has never been convicted of any crime and so has no reason to indulge in child trafficking or whatever they call it.

So for those promoting Schadenfreude or malicious pleasure, whatever the motive for your gloating, we advise that you must do your best to avoid it. Because even the Holy Bible specifically warns: “Do not gloat when your enemy is facing tribulation; when he stumbles, do not let your heart rejoice.” We should be wise to ask God to fill our hearts with his love so that we can overcome the evils of envy and gloating. As we wait for the decision of the court in the UK, it is advisable we respect the privacy of a person who has empowered more people than any other and attracted more projects (spread across Enugu state and beyond) than any other. As our prayers and hearts remain with him and the entire family especially Sonia Ekweremadu, we ask God’s healing power and his favour upon the her and the family.
