FCT, Abuja – Senator Shehu Sani, a former federal lawmaker from Kaduna state, says it is not compulsory to change Nigeria’s name.
However, the political activist said should the country decide to go for a change of name, “The Republic of SONGHAI” should be adopted.
He explained in a tweet posted on Thursday, June 3, that the ancient Songhai empire extended to parts of present Nigeria.
Notes that the former lawmaker made the suggestion following the proposal submitted to the House of Representatives committee on the review of the constitution asking Nigeria to be renamed the “United Africans Republic (UAR)”.
The National Assembly is currently in the process of altering the constitution and making amendments to it.
The proposal for the change of the country’s name was submitted to the committee by Adeleye Jokotoye, a tax consultant in Lagos state, on Wednesday, June 3.
In his submission, Jokotoye said the name, Nigeria, was not coined by a citizen but given to the country by Flora Shaw, wife of Lord Lugard, a colonialist.
