Shehu Sani: Reaction As UN Chief, António Guterres Visits Borno

Senator Shehu Sani, the former Kaduna Central lawmaker, has commended the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, António Guterres, for visiting to Borno State.

Leakblast.com had earlier reported that the UN Chief arrived in Nigeria on Tuesday afternoon for a two-day official visit to the West African country.

Guterres was received at the Maiduguri International Airport by Borno State governor, Babagana Umara Zulum and some UN officials in the country.

The Portuguese diplomat was in the North East state to assess the humanitarian situation resulting from Boko Haram and ISWAP attacks and killings.

Reacting to the visit in a tweet via his Twitter handle on Wednesday, Senator Sani said the visit by the UN Chief to Borno state, the epicentre of terrorist attacks, is a welcome development.

The governorship aspirant in Kaduna State pointed out that Guterrres’ visit to the Northern region to assess the humanitarian situation is very much needed.

He wrote: The visit by @antonioguterres to Nigeria’s Borno state, the epicentre of terrorist attacks is a welcome development. His presence in the North West & Central to assess the humanitarian situation is very much needed.”

Meanwhile, the UN chief has backed the reintegration of repentant terrorists in the North East region.

Guterres stated that the reintegration programme will help achieve peace in Borno state and in the region in general, adding that the move will allow displaced persons to return to their homes.

He made this known on Tuesday while speaking with reporters after visiting an Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Gubio village and another camp built for repentant insurgents in Maiduguri.

The UN chief said he fully supported moves to expand facilities to reintegrate at least 40,000 repentant Boko Haram/ISWAP insurgents in the country.
