Uganda police search Nile for tourist who went to rescue son

Police in Uganda are searching for a British citizen who is suspected to have drowned in the River Nile on Wednesday evening.

Robert Kaweesi, who is British of Ugandan origin, is said to have dived into the river to rescue his 12-year-old son, who seemed overpowered by the waves.

But he did not make it out of the river, and his body has not yet been found.

His son was rescued from the water by other people who ran to help.

The family of six tourists plus a driver had checked into a safari lodge on the banks of the Nile in Pakwach, West Nile region, after which they went swimming, regional police spokesperson Josephine Angucia told the BBC.

Tourist lodges normally advise visitors to be cautious about swimming in the river.
