Benin Republic’s U-20 head coach, Mathias Comlan Deguenon has said although he has total respect for Nigeria, he is adamant his side can beat the Flying Eagles in the WAFU B U-20 Championship final.

Both teams will clash later today at the Stade General Seyni Kountche, Niger Republic.

The Beninese have high hopes of finishing the competition on a positive note after a stellar campaign.

The Young Squirrels were unbeaten in the group stage, with two wins and a draw.

Comlan’s charges defeated neighbours Togo 1-0 in their opening game and were forced to a 0-0 draw by hosts, the Niger Republic in the second fixture.

A 1-0 win against highly-fancied Cote d’Ivoire in their final group game saw them finish top of Group C.

Benin however needed extra time to beat Burkina Faso 2-1 in the semi-final.

“When you say Nigeria, everyone knows what Nigeria stands for. We know in advance that we have a strong opponent. But we are not afraid. We are going to play on our strength to finish this final well,” Deguenon told CAFonline.

“If you have been following since the start of this competition, we have never backed down. It is true that there are moments of weakness where we suffer, but we are there to win the match and not to observe. We will put in place an organization that will allow us to win the match tomorrow.

“We had very little time to prepare for the tournament. The various matches we have played are preparation matches for us. The goal for us is to get a ticket. We never doubted. We know we get there. These matches are preparation matches for us. The number of games we have played is an advantage for us.

“I said the final is a bonus for us after qualifying for CAN U20. There is my captain who took me back afterwards. We held a session at the hotel where the players said they are ready to finish the job and with style. They refuse to see a trophy and not touch it because it is not given to everyone to play a final. I join them in this dynamic so that they play this final to the fullest,” he said.

The two countries will also compete at the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Egypt next year.
