Governor Nyesom Wike has shared his thoughts on the controversial comments by the minister of communications in the past –
Wike is of the opinion that he would have resigned from his position if he found himself in Dr. Isa Pantami’s shoes – Nigerians have been calling for the removal of Pantami or his resignation over his comments in support of terrorist group.
The governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike, has opened up on what he would have done if he found himself in the shoes of the minister of communications and digital economy, Dr. Isa Pantami
Wike in a series of tweets via his official Twitter account on Wednesday, April 21, said that he would have relinquished his duties.
He made the statement in reaction to the comments credited to Pantami in support of extremist groups. According to him, it is unreasonable for the government to allow a person with the issues around the embattled minister to remain in its cabinet. Speaking on calls for Pantami’s resignation, the governor also faulted the continued stay of the minister as a member of the Federal Executive Council (FEC). He maintained that even though Pantami has renounced the comments it was wrong to allow him to continue with his duties. Wike is of the opinion that the minister ought to have resigned but the government does not care.
Pantami has backtracked on some of the extreme views he held about terrorist groups including Taliban and Al-Qaeda. The minister during a Ramadan lecture at the Annor Mosque in Abuja on Saturday, April 17, said he made the controversial comments when he was young and inexperienced.
He told his audience that some of the comments he made then were uttered as far back as when he was a teenager. In a related development, the minister of communications and digital economy has been asked to resign. The call was made by Ndudi Elumelu. Elumelu who is the minority leader of the House of Representatives urged the green chamber to demand his resignation or sack. He said this should be done following the minister’s alleged backing of activities of Jihadist leaders and deadly Islamic sects.
