Wizkid has continued to break barriers with his song, Essence, which features singer-producer Tems.
In a recent chat with Billboard, Wizkid hinted that the song enables Afrobeat to spread love when played.
“We just came out of the craziest pandemic … Afrobeats just spreads love around a room when you play it,” said Wizkid.
RCA records executive vp A&R Tunji Balogun said the song has become emblematic and perceived as the official song for summer.
“That song has become emblematic of being back outside. Then, a narrative on the internet started about the song being the song of the summer — and we took that energy and ran with it,” Balogun told Billboard.
Balogun further said that the song, which made its debut on Billboard Hot 100 songs, Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales chart, and the Billboard Global 200, made history as the first song on the tally to contain vocals in Nigeria’s Yoruba dialect.
“This is the first time where it feels like a song is competing on the level of a similarly promoted song from Western artists in the pop genre. And I hope that’s the lasting influence of the record — that it opens doors for more people with different styles and different textures.”
On August 4, Wizkid announced sales of ticket for his Made In Lagos concert billed to hold in November 2021 inside the O2 Arena. Twelve minutes after the announcement, 20,000 tickets for the show were sold out.
